We set out to clean up site #1, this site is on the North side of the island and has a very narrow shoreline. We found a lot of what seemed to be hurricane debris. We found a metal ladder, treated wood with rebar and crab traps. That was just to list some of the larger debris found, we also found an unbelievable amount of cigarette butts, lighters, bubble wrap, fragmented plastics and bottle caps and rings. The most unusual item we collected was a bucket full of oil, with an oil filter inside. We predicted this came from someone performing an oil change on their boat and was left or forgotten on the island. It was a pretty beautiful and productive day. We collected 186.29 lbs of debris! These were a great group of students and they did a wonderful job of cleaning up our coastline, becoming a positive role model for their peers!
